Las Conchas Fire June 2011   http://picasaweb.google.com/kmhpix/LasConchasFireJune2011

The Las Conchas fire started around 1:00 PM on June 26, 2011 near a Forest Service campground in the Jemez Mountains, apparently caused by a tree that fell onto a power line. This ferocious fire, driven by high winds and bone-dry foliage, traveled 14 miles and burned 40,000 acres in its first day. Despite the efforts of over 2000 firefighters and a squadron of helicopters, it ultimately consumed more than 150,000 acres. It took over five weeks to fully contain the fire. These photos show how it begin rather innocently and quickly turned into a monster wildfire. Residents of Los Alamos were told to leave on June 27 and were allowed back on July 3.

Subjects include: Las Conchas fire, fireworks, helicopter dropping fire retardant, ridge fire, one-year-old deer, elk grazing, scarred canyon walls, chipmunk, Los Alamos National Lab

201002 - Salton Sea   http://picasaweb.google.com/kmhpix/201002SaltonSea

Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge and Wister Waterfowl Management Area, Feb. 16-19, 2010. Huge numbers of birds overwinter at the Salton Sea. Salton Sea is a strange place indeed, an approximate 370-square-mile lake in the middle of a desert, which lies 290 feet below sea level. I had noticed it many times when flying from San Diego to Phoenix or Albuquerque. It is even more remarkable from the air because of the large green irrigated fields that extend from its southern edge all the way to Mexico.

Subjects include: American coots, Greater yellowlegs, Snowy egret, Brown pelican, Western grebe, American avocet, Great egret, Gambel's quail, Mourning dove, White-faced ibises, Northern harrier, Double-crested cormorant, Ring-billed gull, yellow-bill cattle egret, Turkey vulture, Cliff swallow, Bufflehead ducks, Red-winged blackbird, Yellow-rumped warbler, Ruddy duck, Black-necked stilt, Western meadowlark, Burrowing owl, Sweet acacia, Geothermal power plants.

Places include: Salton Sea, Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge, Wister Waterfowl Management Area, San Diego.

200911 - Backyard Coyotes   http://picasaweb.google.com/kmhpix/200911BackyardCoyotes

This morning we heard a ruckus in our yard. It turned out that three coyotes were brawling right outside our bedroom window. It was soon clear they were fighting over something buried in the snow. The largest coyote quickly took charge; while the other two skulked around at a distance, the alpha male proceeded to dig in the snow to uncover a haunch of a deer. He gnawed on it for several minutes before taking it behind the lilac bushes in the back of our yard. These pictures were taken through a double-paned window, so they are a bit soft.

Photos from a photographic workshop conducted by Brad Hill. The place is the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Sanctuary, which is located in British Columbia about 28 miles south of Alaska. The Khutz is a magical place. The grizzlies were very much at ease with our presence and not at all aggressive. Our guide, Tom Ellison, told us this is because they have not been hunted in the Sanctuary for decades. He sought out extraordinary photographic situations, which the photos in this album hopefully demonstrate.

Examples of "painterly" effects provided by Photoshop Elements 6 in its filter menu. One or more effects are shown for each scene, as well as the original photo. The PSE6 name for each effect is given, followed by the parameters used. I think these simple-to-use filters may be useful for creating a desired visual impression. Still, my wife likes the originals best.
