The Jemez Mountain Trail Runs 2017 were held on May 20, a cool and sunny day, glorious for running. There were 262 runners who finished the 15-mile run, 197 finished the 50-km run, and 87 finished the 50-mile run. These photos were taken by Ken Hanson; They may be downloaded for your own use.

Day trip to Pecos Canyon in New Mexico - beautiful high country on the East side of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Black bears are fond of cherries. This one was chased out of a small cherry tree on Barranca Mesa, Los Alamos, in the morning but returned in the afternoon to climb a much taller cherry tree. After she ate her fill of cherries and settled down for a siesta, an officer from NM Game and Fish tranquilized and removed the bear for relocation elsewhere in New Mexico.

Photos from two hikes to waterfalls in northern New Mexico. The hikes, sponsored by the Pajarito Environmental Education Center of Los Alamos, were led by Doug Scott, who has identified more than one hundred waterfalls throughout New Mexico. The day was a little damp, but we enjoyed seeing several beautiful waterfalls.
Places: Battleship Mesa, San Ildefonso Pueblo, Lower Resumidero Falls, Lichen Falls, Rio Chama
The Los Alamos Photo Club traveled to Plaza Blanca to photograph the new moon as it rose above the horizon. Unfortunately, although the sky had mostly cleared after afternoon rains, clouds lingered on the horizon beyond the Sangre Mountains, which obscured the rising moon. Still, Plaza Blanca is such a beautiful place that we enjoyed ourselves by photgraphing the cliffs in the light of the setting sun.
Place: Plaza Blanca, Abiquiu, NM
My son and I drove into the back country at the Valles Caldera National Preserve in New Mexico to see this pristine wilderness. The Preserve contains numerous lush high-mountain meadows, which inspire panoramas, because it is hard to get everything in a single photograph.
Place: Valles Caldera National Preserve

Tent Rocks, near Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a little-known and seldom-visited gem of fantastic natural beauty. Officially known as the Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, its main attraction is a winding, 0.6-mile-long canyon with numerous hoodoos.Sometimes the canyon is only a few feet wide with sheer walls; sometimes it is quite broad with trees and bushes. Members of the Los Alamos Photo Club made an outing to Tent Rocks in November 2014 and came home with many wonderful photos.
Place: Tent Rocks National Monument, Cochiti Pueblo, New Mexico
From a photographic trip made by the Los Alamos Photo Club, these photos show the beauty of a local geologic marvel called Plaza Blanca, which is owned by Dar Al Islam. We timed the trip perfectly to coincide with the fall foliage of the cottonwoods.

After we lost our beloved Lhasa Apso, Ruby Lou, we decided we needed another. We call her Ruby Lou II. We picked her up at the Albuquerque airport (with Teressa and Tom) on April 4, 2014, a day before her three-month birthday. She is a cute as can be and is starting to show a lot of spunk.
At one year old, Ruby II frolics in the snow with great joy.

The Las Conchas fire started around 1:00 PM on June 26, 2011 near a Forest Service campground in the Jemez Mountains, apparently caused by a tree that fell onto a power line. This ferocious fire, driven by high winds and bone-dry foliage, traveled 14 miles and burned 40,000 acres in its first day. Despite the efforts of over 2000 firefighters and a squadron of helicopters, it ultimately consumed more than 150,000 acres. It took over five weeks to fully contain the fire. These photos show how it begin rather innocently and quickly turned into a monster wildfire. Residents of Los Alamos were told to leave on June 27 and were allowed back on July 3.

Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge and Wister Waterfowl Management Area, Feb. 16-19, 2010. Huge numbers of birds overwinter at the Salton Sea. Salton Sea is a strange place indeed, an approximate 370-square-mile lake in the middle of a desert, which lies 290 feet below sea level. This morning we heard a ruckus in our yard. It turned out that three coyotes were brawling right outside our bedroom window. It was soon clear they were fighting over something buried in the snow. The largest coyote quickly took charge; while the other two skulked around at a distance, the alpha male proceeded to dig in the snow to uncover a haunch of a deer. He gnawed on it for several minutes before taking it behind the lilac bushes in the back of our yard. These pictures were taken through a double-paned window, so they are a bit soft.

Photos from a photographic workshop conducted by Brad Hill. The place is the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Sanctuary, which is located in British Columbia about 28 miles south of Alaska. The Khutz is a magical place. The grizzlies were very much at ease with our presence and not at all aggressive.
